GG.relay is a macro relay lens that is specially designed to be used with the new breed of Depth of Field (DoF) adapters, adding the capability to use Cinema lenses and Classic Photographic lenses to 2/3” & 1/2” camcorders. GG.relay brinks the beauty of shallow depth of field to all broadcast and cinema grade camcorders, in the most flexible, modular and cost effective way.
Up until today the 2/3” & 1/2” B4 mount cameras in order to take advantage of the swallow depth of field that is available in 35mm film cameras the only way was to use a device from two sources a German and an American manufacture.
With cost more than 8 - 15 times lower, today, there is a plurality of DoF adapters, but all of them are designed to be used with small cameras such as HVX200, EX etc. that have a fixed lens.
These cameras are having very high resolution similar to their bigger counterparts so there is no problem using these adapters with bigger cameras that have 2/3 sensors or even 1/2 sensors and don’t have fixed lenses.
In order to use these low cost DoF adapters we need a relay lens with a suitable mount to be used with 2/3 and 1/2 camcorders.

Motion FX has designed the first relay lens for 2/3” & 1/2”* B4 mount cameras and DoF adapters like SGblade and others*, that can be used with all frame sizes and camera mounts.
GG.relay/rev3, is the first ever modular relay lens in the industry and the only 2/3 B4 Full frame 35 available in the world.
It consists of three main parts, the exchangeable camera mount, the lens block and the exchangeable adapter connection part.
The lens block is build from a solid piece of aircraft grade aluminum that’s resistant to thermal interference from the camera. An apochromatic macro lens consisting of, a six group’s eight elements design, which combines the maximum MTF with the minimum light loss.

The back focus of the relay is fixed in order to maintain the maximum precision of the relay/camera system within +/- 2 microns in inter-axial and focal plane parallelism with the sensor in order to get the best possible performance in chromatic aberrations and flatness of focal plane.
To focus the relay with the adapter we use the less critical front focus mechanism (and thus less costly) that is securing precise focusing in the ground glass.
The aperture range is F2.8 to F11.
The relay lens can be converted by the user with the appropriate conversion kit to cover both the S35 frame size and the FF35 frame size.
Additionally the relay lens, can be reconfigured by the user in just 10 minutes with the appropriate conversion kit, to be used to either 2/3 or 1/2 camcorders.
Lastly there is a work in progress to make conversion kits for Red Rock micro (Q4 10’) and Letus adapters (Q1 11’), so one relay lens compatible with everything…!
