Footage Gallery of the GG.relay Rev2.

This is a series of test shoots with the GG.relay Rev2 along with the prototype 3 of the developing FiberScreen project. The relay is for mounting in a Varicam 2/3 B4 the Brevis35 that has internally the FiberScreen as a ground glass. The GG.relay has a variable aperture F2.8 to F8 and is set for Super 35 frame 24.8mm x 13,5mm. In most of the test the relay is at F2.8 unless is stated differently on the notes below.

The FiberScreen has the ability to operate also static so in some of the points of the test I turn off the vibration. When I go from vibration ON to vibration OFF I move my finger in front of the lens horizontally, when I go from vibration OFF to vibration ON I’m doing my fingers like a parrot… I have left intentionally some dust on the FiberScreen in order to be evident that is not vibrating.

On the other hand I mistakenly didn’t align it very well… so there is a light falloff on the right side of the frame… The slight vignette is due to the FiberScreen, the new prototype 4 I expect to not have vignette at all, even in FD 24 F2.8… On the stop down tests every step in brightness is half stop.

The test is shot with Varicam on tape DVCPRO-HD 1280 x 720, edited in FCP, color corrected in Color and encoded to H.264 at 1280 x 720. The camera was on shoulder, the whole setup was longer than my Cinestyle Canon zoom HJ11x4,7 KLL SC by 1cm, so shooting in a reporter style was easy… Varicam-F with battery, Chrosziel handgrip and GG.relay > Brevis35 > Zeiss ZF lens 7.2 kilos… in comparison with canon zoom 8.8 kilos… so relay, Brevis35 and Zeiss ZF lens was lighter by 1.6 kilos…!

I want to thank my children Constantine 2,5 years old, Anais 4 years old and Stefanos 5.5 years old, for helping me…

System Recommendation for best viewing:

MAC OSX with Apple display.

Set display profile to sRGB, go to System preferences > Display > and put the brightness to 90%, then go to Color tab and uncheck the [show profiles for this display only], now select the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile.

For PC’s use the 6500K white point with sRGB display profile

In case that you can't get it to play immediately, or you have problems with playback this is the link to download the video. Use QuickTime to playback, be aware that it may be looking a little bit darker on the midtones, than it looks on the web streaming version (try the adobe flash player once more from the above link, please... I'm a perfectionist...). in any case this is the link

Notes of the test video

00:00

First part is all vibrating; the lens is Zeiss ZF 50mm F1.4, aperture set to F2.8 most of the time.

01:10

Stop down test, vibrating ON, from F1.4 to F16

01:28

Put gain to +3 db’s to get the maximum light

02:00

Notice a vignette on the right side is due to XY misalignment…

02:38

A bit under exposed

03:17

The same with relay aperture to F2.8, good exposure

05:53

The front lens is at F16 an the vibration is ON

07:04

The front lens from F2.8 to F2 notice the difference in sharpness, ZF 50mm F1.4 is very bad below F2.8…

08:19

Check the edge sharpness

09:04

Second part is with Zeiss ZF 28mm F2, this part is with the GG.relay at F4 and the front lens at F2.8, vibration is OFF

09:47

Vibrating is ON

10:24

This part is with the GG.relay at F2.8 and the front lens at F2.8, vibration is OFF

10:57

Vibration is On, check out the shining spot in the right side to see the bokeh…

12:06

A high contrast part with highlights, vibrating is ON

13:34

A wide shot , vibrating is ON

13:51

The same with vibration OFF

14:08

Vibration ON

14:44

Vibration ON to OFF

15:19

Vibration OFF to ON

16:03
